UK trans woman takes own life in men's prison

Sat 7 Jan 2017 In: International News View at Wayback View at NDHA

A transgender woman prisoner in the UK has been found dead in her cell in a remand prison, apparently having taken her own life. Jenny Swift Trans activists say Jenny Swift, who had been charged with attempted murder and criminal damage, had asked to be placed in a women's prison. They say she had also repeatedly asked prison authorities for continuing access to hormone therapy which she had been taking for three years as part of her transitioning process but this had not eventuated. She was apparently suffering severe physical and possible emotional side-effects associated with withdrawal from the hormone treatment. UK prison guidelines state that a prisoner must be placed in a facility which matches their legally-recognised gender identity. Prison authorities have not said why this was not done in Swift's case.
