Dying lesbian prisoner and ex-Silver Fern Vicki Letele has expressed her gratitude to the many people who campaigned for her release from prison. Vicki Letele as she appears in the Sunday programme interview The Corrections Department gave a positive signal to Letele's parole board enabling her to be released to spend her remaining months with her partner and children. In an interview to be shown on TVNZ 1's Sunday programme tomorrow evening at 7 o'clock, Letele, who had been serving time for mortgage fraud relating to the provision of low-cost homes and has been diagnosed with terminal cancer, thanks those who have supported her. But she also speaks of being "heartbroken" when Corrections initially opposed her application for compassionate leave.
