Peaceful protest staged as Tamaki gives sermon

Sun 20 Nov 2016 In: New Zealand Daily News View at Wayback

A group of roughly 20 LGBTI and straight community members staged a protest outside Destiny Church Rotorua this morning as Brian Tamaki gave his sermon. The Teach Brian Tamaki Love peaceful protest saw community members holding placards and rainbow flags and singing songs such as “All You Need is Love” in response to Tamaki's claim last week that earthquakes are caused by sins such as being gay. Organiser Dan Woodward, who spoke to the Rotorua Daily Post, said the protest was not aimed at the church itself but rather at Tamaki and his comments made regarding the earthquakes. He told the reporter that the church does a lot of good in the community but when you are in a position of power such as Tamaki, you need to be responsible for comments such these. The peaceful protest was attended by gay general election candidate Tamati Coffey and wrapped up as this morning’s church service began.
