Transgender Day of Remembrance services are being held around the country today and tomorrow to remember those that have passed on and to mourn the 295 people from the transgender community that were murdered in 2016. The 295 violent deaths of transgender and gender diverse people this year spans 33 countries, with Brazil, Mexico and the United States having the highest recorded numbers. Data is collected using internet searches and through cooperation with local trans activists and organisations and it is acknowledged that data such as this is not systematically produced and many cases go unreported. Transgender Europe, who records the data, say “Throughout all six world regions, the highest absolute numbers have been found in countries with strong trans movements and trans or LGBT organisations that carry out some kind of professional monitoring.” The event has been held around the world each year on 20 November, since 1999.
