Dying prisoner Vicki Letele has been released

Thu 10 Nov 2016 In: New Zealand Daily News View at Wayback View at NDHA

(7pm update: Vicki Letele has arrived home.) The Parole Board have announced that terminally ill prisoner Vicki Letele is to be released from prison to spend her final months at home with her loved ones. The ex-Kiwi Ferns player Vicki Letele, who has a female partner and three young children, was serving a three-year, two-month sentence for fraud when she was diagnosed with stomach cancer. The Board made the decision on grounds of compassion under section 41 of the Parole Act 2002. Her family have been seeking her early release following her diagnosis and the Parole Board initially declined their request. However, thousands of supporters have a petition calling for her release and Corrections officially advocated on her behalf. The Parole Board will not be commenting on the situation but has said in a statement that it “appreciates the pain and hurt the family is facing”.
