NZ in the midst of sperm drought

Sat 15 Oct 2016 In: New Zealand Daily News View at Wayback View at NDHA

With the waiting list for donated sperm in New Zealand hitting two years and a sharp increase in same-sex couples and women exploring this option, a report is advising the Government to allow people to import sperm and eggs from overseas, to bring the nation in line with Australia and England. The report was released by the Advisory Committee on Assisted Reproductive Technology and Dr John Peek, General Manager of Fertility Associate told to the Guardian that this shortage of sperm donors has been a problem in New Zealand “for a long time”. “I think rather than peaking it has become a continuous drought. Like climate change, it has become the new normal,” he says. 25 percent of the women who received donated sperm in 2015 from Fertility Associates were lesbian women.
