Tamati Coffey, the gay TV presenter turned bar owner has been confirmed as Labour's candidate for the Waiariki Maori electorate which includes Tauranga, Whakatane, Rotorua and Taupo. For four general elections, since 2005, the electorate has been held by Te Ururoa Flavell of the Maori party. Coffee, who was the only nominee, was confirmed as candidate during a Labour party hui last evening. he stood in the 2014 election for the general seat of Rotorua when he polled second but considerably behind National's Todd McClay.
