Calls for Tonga to review Criminal Offences Act

Fri 7 Oct 2016 In: International News View at Wayback View at NDHA

Tonga’s legislation regarding homosexuality is soon to be officially challenged by members of the LGBTI community.   This December the Tongan Leiti Association will petition the government to make changes to the Criminal Offences Act as they fear that the religious leaders in the country are pushing for anti-gay laws -that include punishments of up to ten years for sodomy and cross dressing - to be enforced. Radio New Zealand reports that in 2013, during its UN Human Rights Council periodic review, Tonga was recommended to decriminalise homosexuality however representatives from the nation asked that this be deferred for further consultation.
