Same-sex partners granted parental rights

Wed 11 Jun 2003 In: New Zealand Daily News

Gay parents will soon be able to name their partners as legal co-guardians of their children, including those conceived through fertility techniques, provided both partners are consenting. The changes have been announced as part of a new bill, the Care of Children bill, which replaces the 1968 Guardianship Act, a law Associate Justice Minister Lianne Dalziel says "does not reflect the diversity of family arrangements that now exist". National Party spokesman Nick Smith has already condemned the bill as being an attack on traditional families, saying there is "too much political correctness" contained in it.
