A Taranaki man has been found guilty of 33 sex offences, spanning over 20 years, committed against 15 young males. He now faces a preventative detention sentence. Radio NZ reports that the 33-year-old man, Nigel Allan Hauauru Nelson, was on trial for rape, indecent assault, unlawful sexual connection and sexual exploitation of a person under 18. A promise of money from a fake prostitution and porn business that he said he owned was said to have lured many of the young men into sex acts with Nelson. The offences were committed across the Waikato, King Country and Taranaki between 1996 and 2015 and began when Nelson was 16. He was initially up against 51 charges in total, two of which he pled guilty and nine were dropped in court. Stuff reports that it was revealed during the trial that five of the men pressing charges had previously laid complaints with the police between 1996 and 2006 however, no action was taken. Nelson has been issued a first strike warning and was remanded in custody until sentencing on November 2.
