Manning ends hunger strike, agreement on surgery

Wed 14 Sep 2016 In: International News View at Wayback View at NDHA

Chelsea Manning, the US soldier jailed for 35 years for leaking military secrets, has ended her hunger strike after the army agreed to provide her with gender transition surgery. Chelsea Manning Psychologists recommended in April that manning should be given the treatment and in July the US military ended its ban on transgender people serving in the armed forces. Manning started a hunger strike five days ago, saying she was being bullied by the US government and denied treatment for gender dysphoria. In July she attempted suicide over the lack of treatment. "I am unendingly relieved that the military is finally doing the right thing. I applaud them for that. This is all that I wanted - for them to let me be me," she has said today in a statement released on her behalf.
