Auckland Council is aiming to improve the way it engages and communicates with the LGBTI communities in the city and has launched new Rainbow Communities Engagement Guidelines for staff.   The inaugural members of the Rainbow Communities Advisory Panel Written in collaboration with the Rainbow Communities Advisory Panel, the guidelines are available to all council and council-controlled organisation staff. It is believed that this is the first document of its kind among New Zealand’s local councils and has been designed to read alongside the council’s Significance and Engagement Policy which reflects the growing diversification of culture and identity across Auckland. Kenneth Aiolupotea, Head of Market Research and Engagement, says “Our region has an incredibly diverse population, and as a council we can make a real difference by making sure we engage with all of our communities in an inclusive and respectful way. These guidelines will help us do that. “The guidelines are a valuable resource for any council staff member wanting to make sure they are engaging and communicating in the best possible way,” says Aiolupotea. “It’s another step forward in our goal to become the world’s most liveable city.”
