New Hamilton club to provide a safe space

Thu 8 Sep 2016 In: New Zealand Daily News View at Wayback

The man behind Hamilton’s new gay club says it is important the LGBTI community has a safe night-spot, something that the city hasn’t had since the closure of its only gay club in 2014.   MARK TAYLOR/FAIRFAX NZ Bralais Nightclub is to be Hamilton’s brand new hot-spot for the LGBTI community, taking pride and place on Victoria Street, the same street that once hosted the gay club Shine, which closed its doors in 2014. Co-owner Lawrence Needham says he is “really excited” to be opening up the new club, which will be open Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights. Needham is in business with his sister, Jess Dawson and the pair hope to have the club open by November. The drag performer of fifteen years says “Hamilton has needed a gay club for the past couple of years, so we’re really excited that the community is finally going to have somewhere safe to go.”
