Gay MP Kevin Hague to leave Parliament

Mon 5 Sep 2016 In: New Zealand Daily News View at Wayback

One of the country's longest-serving openly gay MPs, Kevin Hague, is to quit politics to head an environmental agency. Hague was a staffer then Executive Director of the NZ AIDS Foundation before becoming chief executive of the West Coast District Health Board. A committed tramper and environmentalist he joined the Greens party and was elected to represent the West Coast electorate in 2008. He was a significant force in ensuring the passing of Marriage Equality legislation. Hague was considered a front-runner to become a co-leader of the Greens last year but missed out on the role to newcomer James Shaw. He is to head up the Forest and Bird organisation which advocates for the country's natural environment.
