Caster Semenya has been awarded Athlete of the Year and honoured by South Africa’s Minister of Sport with the Recognition of Excellence Award. Image: Getty Images The gold medal Olympian accepted the Award saying “I dedicate this award to my haters” and received a standing ovation at the event held by SPAR gsports - an NGO raising the profile of South African women in sport. Semenya won gold in the women’s 800m race in Rio. She has been on the receiving end of an intense and extremely invasive media frenzy because she has hyperandrogenism - higher testosterone levels than the women she competes against in the 800m. She does not self-identify as intersex. The awards were presented to her by the South African Minister of Sport, Fikile Mbalula.
