Hook-up culture to hit the stage

Tue 30 Aug 2016 In: New Zealand Daily News View at Wayback

The producer and founder of the Legacy Project is bringing the story of hook-up culture to Auckland’s The Basement Theatre.   Hook-up boys is the sexy, and slightly dirty, new play that brings to the stage the stories about the apps, snaps and hookups that heavily feature in the modern gay experience. Writer and Director Bruce Brown says "I’ve always been drawn to writing characters that seek connection but often via deceitful means. This underlying contradiction drives these encounters and questions whether we can truly connect with anyone when we can’t even be honest with ourselves.” Brown is the producer behind Legacy Project, an annual queer theatre development project that aims to provide opportunities for the LGBTI community to share their unique Kiwi stories on stage. He has also directed Shakespeare’s The Winter’s Tale, April Phillips’ Hotel and Terry Johnson’s The Graduate for Ellerslie Theatre. Hook-up Boys 20-24 September, 6.30pm The Basement Theatre, Auckland
