US TV network slammed for ignoring glbti families

Thu 11 Aug 2016 In: International News View at Wayback View at NDHA

Australia's gold medalist at Beijing, Matthew Mitcham The USA's Olympic coverage television network, NBC, has come under fire for all but ignoring partners and family of glbti athletes at the Olympics, while showing the partners and family of straight athletes. The issue has been apparent since the Beijing Olympics when the network failed to mention Australian gold medal swimmer Matthew Mitcham's partner in the stands although they highlighted partners of straight athletes. And they didn't mention that Mitcham was the only out gay athlete at those games. At Rio the network has failed to mention the fiancé of British medalist Tom Daley and when lesbian Brazilian volleyballer Larissa França was glimpsed hugging her wife the NBC commentator described the woman as her "husband." And while NBC has shown the heterosexual parents of other athletes together as a couple it showed the fathers of US diver Jordan Windle separately.
