Villumsen's 6th place means no Olympic medal

Thu 11 Aug 2016 In: New Zealand Daily News View at Wayback

Kiwi cyclist Linda Villumsen has missed out on an Olympic medal, finishing sixth in the Cycling Road Women's Individual Time Trial. The race was run in the early hours of this morning in gusty wind and frequent rain showers. The winner was American Kristin Armstrong with Russia's Olga Zabelinskaya second and Rio road race champion Anna van der Breggen third. Commonwealth and World champion Villumsen says she was tense from the beginning of the race and although she usually settles down as the race progresses but this time that didn't happen. Villumsen was previously out of medal contention in the Rio women's road race, finishing 23rd. Overall medal prospects for New Zealand's three gay and lesbian competitors at the Rio Olympics are now negligible with Robbie Manson and rowing partner Chris Harris narrowly missing getting through to the men's double sculls A final where the medals are competed for. There is a slim chance of the Football Ferns including lesbian player Katie Duncan coming into medal contention but it is based on what happens in forthcoming matches between other teams and is considered extremely unlikely.
