Duncan/Ferns' Rio chances hanging by a thread

Wed 10 Aug 2016 In: New Zealand Daily News View at Wayback

Katie Duncan The chances of lesbian soccer player Katie Duncan competing for medals at the Rio Olympics hang by a thread as the Football Ferns have lost to France this morning. So far the team had chalked up a 2-nill defeat to the USA and a 1-nill win against Columbia in pool play. But they have just gone down 3-nill to France. It's a complicated system which decides which teams go through to the quarter finals. We defer to the NZ Herald's sports experts who explain the situation this way: "The tournament calls for the top two teams in each of three pools to progress, along with the best two of the three third place-getters. New Zealand’s hopes hinge on the outcome of Sweden’s game against China in group E. Canada, Germany and Australia are through from group F; Brazil are top in group E, while the United States and France, world Nos 1 and 3 respectively have taken their places in the quarter-finals. The clutch game is coming up shortly between China and Sweden. Both have three points in group E, with China having a superior -1 differential, two better than Sweden. If China give the Swedes a serious touch-up, New Zealand, who are -4, could scrape in. That final French goal, a penalty in the final minute, might yet prove the difference." Thanks NZH! You might have to read that a few times to get the gist of it, but the upshot isthe chances of Duncan and her teammates having a shot at a medal are looking slim.
