A member of the Brazilian women's sevens rugby team has very publicly become the first athlete to receive a marriage proposal at the Rio Olympics. At the medal ceremony which saw Australia take the gold and New Zealand the Silver, Marjorie Enya asked her girlfriend of two years, player Isadora Cerullo, to marry her. In a short speech before gathered media, Enya said “As soon as I knew she was in the squad I thought I have to make this special,” she said. “I know rugby people are amazing and they would embrace it.” She told a BBC reporter "She is the love of my life... the Olympic Games can look like closure but for me it’s starting a new life with someone... I wanted to show people that love wins.”
