Pro LGBTI MP seeks position as Speaker

Mon 1 Aug 2016 In: New Zealand Daily News View at Wayback

One of Fran Wilde’s right hand men from the Homosexual Law Reform campaign is hoping to become the next Speaker of the House in Parliament. Trevor Mallard will not be standing again in the Hutt South electorate and is looking to be nominated as a list MP. The Labour MP currently holds the position of Assistant Speaker in Parliament, a role which requires him to be non-partisan. First elected to Parliament in 1984, Mallard has held the Hutt South seat as a Labour MP since 1996. Labour would need to be able to form a government for Mallard to become Speaker. In 2008 Mallard spoke to the UN General Assembly on HIV/AIDS and urged governments to eliminate stigma and discrimination faced by all HIV positive people, alluding to the gay community.
