Transgender identity should no longer be considered a mental disorder by the World Health organisation, according to a Mexican study released yesterday. The study, conducted amongst 250 transgender adults accessing the services of a specialised clinic in Mexico City, showed that mental distress experienced by transgender people is the result of outside influences such as violence and social rejection. The Mexican study is the first in a series to be conducted in Brazil, France, India, Lebanon and South Africa. The results of the combined studies will be presented at the 11th revision of the WHO's International Classification of Diseases in 2018.
