The National MP known for his viral “big gay rainbow” speech that he delivered during the marriage equality campaign, has announced he will retire at next year’s election. The Pakuranga MP is known by most for his speech during the final reading of the Marriage Amendment Bill that landed him an invite to the Ellen show. The most memorable lines of which included; “One of the messages that I had was that this bill was the cause of our drought. Well, in the Pakuranga electorate this morning it was pouring with rain. We had the most enormous big gay rainbow across my electorate.” Williamson began his career in politics in 1987 and has held the Pakuranga seat ever since. During his career he has held the portfolios; Research, Science and Technology, Communications, Statistics, Information Technology, Transport, Local Government and Broadcasting. In 2013 Williamson considered running for the Auckland mayoralty, although quickly decided against the idea.
