Commisioner:HLR heroes should be knights, dames

Fri 29 Jul 2016 In: New Zealand Daily News View at Wayback

A Human Rights Commissioner is calling for the heroes of Homosexual Law Reform to be honoured with damehoods and knighthoods. Human Rights Commissioner Richard Tankersley Commissioner Richard Tankersley says those who fought for our human rights, campaigning for the decriminalisation of homosexuality need to be recognised by the Government. “Our Government regularly honours New Zealanders who do extraordinary things: I think it’s time for our Government to honour New Zealanders who fought for the human rights of gay New Zealanders at a time when it was incredibly dangerous to do so. “Whenever I think about hatred, I think back to 1985 and 1986. I was a young guy and involved in gay rights activism and the hatred we encountered from fellow Kiwis was vicious, brutal and palpable.” His comments come as Christchurch prepares to celebrate Homosexual Law Reform with leaders of the campaign - such as Bill logan - at a special dinner and dance event this evening. “We are very lucky to have Bill Logan as our keynote speaker. Bill is one of those brave ones, the key driver behind the Gay Task Force in Wellington during the 80s,” says Tankersley. While tickets for the dinner component of tonight’s event are no longer available, tickets for the dance portion of the evening, running from 9pm -3am can be bought on the door.
