Murder of trans woman investigated as hate crime

Thu 28 Jul 2016 In: International News View at Wayback

A Mexican transgender woman has been brutally murdered in what is being investigated as a hate crime.   The burnt body of 24-year-old Paulett Gonzalez was found by Police in Celaya, Guanajuato a month after she went missing in the nearby city of Irapuato. Due to the extent of the burns, Spanish language outlet laSexta reports that DNA testing was needed in order to confirm her identity. Just last year, Gonzalez had been crowned the winner of Mexico’s Gay Beauty Queen pageant. According to Transgender Europe’s Trans Murder Monitoring project, between 2008-2014 the number of transgender people reported to have been murdered in Mexico was 194.
