Wed 20 Jul 2016 In: International News View at Wayback

Sydney is looking to upgrade the lighting in LGBTI hotspots to better protect the community.   Image: David Gray Proposed by Councillor Linda Scott, the initiative comes as Sydney reviews how it can support the LGBTI community following the Orlando mass shooting. Clover Moore, The Lord Mayor of Sydney says “The violent shooting in Orlando Florida is a stark reminder that while much progress has been made for our LGBTI community, we still need to fight prejudice wherever it exists.” New South Wales Police will be brought on board to support the safety initiatives. “Everyone has the right to feel safe and free to walk our City’s streets and enjoy our City’s night life without fear of abuse or for their physical safety,” says Scott. “Improving lighting in areas experiencing high rates of assault at night has been shown to be an evidence based strategy in reducing incidences of night time assaults.” “I know many still do not feel safe on our city streets. It’s 2016. Hate speech and violence on our streets must stop now.”
