One of the Star Trek TV and movie franchise's best-known characters, Hikaru Sulu, will be revealed to be gay in the next movie. John Cho as Sulu The character of Sulu was always assumed to be straight, as were all Star Trek main characters from the show's beginnings as a cult TV show in the 1960s. He was played by gay actor George Takei who says the show's creator, Gene Roddenberry, was always specific that Sulu was straight. George Takei In what is supposed to be a homage to Takei's high visibility in US glbti rights campaigns in recent years the writer of the next movie, Star Trek Beyond, decided to make Sulu, to be played by John Cho, gay and to give him a same-sex partner. George Takei as Sulu in the original TV series However, Takei says he advised the movie's producers against the move, concerned that it would appear that Sulu was closeted previously. He felt it would be better to introduce a new character who could be gay.
