Aussie PM dines with "Gays deserves AIDS" cleric

Fri 17 Jun 2016 In: International News View at Wayback

Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has had to apologise after inviting to dinner a preacher who promotes the view that gays deserve AIDS. Sheikh Shady Asuleiman Turnbull hosted an iftar dinner to break ramadan at which he hoped to build political bridges to and between the Muslim community leaders. One of his guests was Sheikh Shady Alsuleiman, president of the Australian National Imams Council who preached that homosexuality is "an evil action" which causes God to give gay people AIDS. After the dinner Turnbull apologised, saying “Views like this are wrong, unacceptable and I condemn them... If I had been aware that he made those remarks … he would not have been invited... homophobia should be condemned everywhere. Turnbull is also currently under fire for gutting a sex education campaign of much of its glbti content after pressure from right-wing Christian MPs who claimed it was “brainwashing”.
