Auckland War Memorial Museum has withdrawn a job application form which asked prospective staff members to indicate their sexuality. Auckland Museum illuminated for the Auckland Pride Festival The form was produced by a UK-based recruitment company which the museum has contracted to find a replacement for its director who is leaving the role. Explained as being for "equal opportunities monitoring" the question was amongst others which asked the applicant's gender, age, ethnicity and whether they are married, in a civil partnership or single. Legal advice has suggested the sexuality question, even if it is not mandatory, contravenes New Zealand's human rights legislation which makes it illegal to discriminate on the basis of sexuality amongst other criteria. It is, for instance, against the law to discuss such matters as sexuality in job interviews.
