To mark the 30th anniversary of Parliament’s final vote on the Homosexual Law Reform Bill, Ngā Taonga Sound and Vision has created a programme that will take you back to the heated meetings, street rallies and debates that began almost immediately after the bill was introduced into Parliament. ‘Thin Edge of the Wedge’ features archival news, event footage, talkback and comment from around the country during the 16 months the proposed legislation took to get through Parliament, and highlights the differing views and controversial issues that sat alongside the Bill. Although most of the footage comes from the mainstream media, audiences will be treated to “clips from a private recording filmed by the Auckland Women’s Community Video Collective highlight the work and energy from New Zealanders who, despite not identifying as gay men, put their shoulders to the wheel of momentum in a campaign for visibility, security and, perhaps most importantly, equality for all,” say Ngā Taonga.
