Twelve states in the US are filing a lawsuit against the Obama administration - the latest being Mississippi - over its stance on transgender rights. Photo: Reuters/Kevin Lamarque The administration has intervened in the anti-trans laws currently active in many states - such as the anti-trans bathroom law in North Carolina. Most recently it sent a letter to all schools stating that in order to receive federal funds, “a school may provide separate facilities on the basis of sex, but must allow transgender students access to such facilities consistent with their gender identity.” The letter also stated that students should not be required to provide documentation or medical proof of their gender identity. Officials from Texas, Alabama, Wisconsin, West Virginia, Tennessee, Arizona, Oklahoma, Maine, Louisiana, Utah and Georgia were named in the lawsuit against the administration, with Mississippi Governor Phil Bryant intending to join “as soon as possible”. The lawsuit asks the Federal District Court in Wichita Falls, Texas, to block the federal government from “implementing, applying or enforcing the new rules, regulations and guidance interpretations.”
