The NZAF is warning against high-risk ‘sex roulette’ parties. Sex roulette parties are said to be a ‘new trend’ in Spain among gay and bisexual men in which unprotected-sex parties are organised and an HIV positive person is invited as the special guest. Nick Laing, General Manager of Operations at the NZAF says at present the organisations has had no feedback regarding sex roulette parties taking place in New Zealand, however warns that there is a high level risk of infection with this behaviour. “Any time that there is unprotected sex there is a risk of transmission of STI’s including HIV and in a group setting these could be transmitted to multiple people leading to an increase in infections in the community,” says Laing. He says currently under New Zealand law, it is the responsibility of an HIV positive person to use protection “as long as a person is using condoms every time they have vaginal or anal sex, the person would be fulfilling their duty of protecting their sexual partners from HIV infection. “HIV is a community concern and we are all in this together, so preventing HIV is our collective responsibility. “Being responsible for our own sexual health by using condoms each time during sex to protect against HIV and STIs, getting tested regularly and being supportive of one another plays a big part in keeping each other safe and well.”
