Act's Hide taunts men with gay "insult"

Sat 1 Mar 2003 In: New Zealand Daily News

Senior Act MP Rodney Hide has been accused of taunting a group of men by calling them "gays." In the incident at a Waiheke Island resort bar Hide apparently asked an ACI company union delegate, from a group also meeting at the resort, “Can't you handle your piss?” Later, as Hide left the bar, he is said to have asked members of the same group “What time do you gays go to bed?” which some of the men are reported to have taken offense to. ACI human resources manager Bruce Woodcock has also revealed that Hide had asked him in the toilet if he was gay. Woodcock said he and the other men felt insulted and believe Hide should apologise. A Fijian delegate who says he was offended at being called gay says Hide apologised to him. Hide says he cannot recall making jokes or comments about gays.
