The number of same-sex marriages in New Zealand continues to stand strong with 453 couples entering into marriage in 2015. Same-sex marriage was legalised in August of 2013 and in the last few months of the year 210 couples had made the most of the new law. The following year 486 same-sex couples wed. The statistics from 2015 show more female couples are saying their vows, with 100 more marrying than male same-sex couples. It appears that marriage is a more popular choice for same-sex couples than civil-unions are, only 18 same-sex couples chose to enter into a civil union last year, a far cry from the 234 couples who did in 2012, the year before they were able to marry. The first same-sex marriage law in the world was passed in 2001 in the Netherlands, since then, more than 23 countries have followed suit.
