Mayor advises Banks to acknowledge gays

Thu 27 Feb 2003 In: New Zealand Daily News

Wellington mayor Kerry Prendegast says her Auckland counterpart John Banks needs to show greater willingness to support his city's gay community. Speaking after a visiting American urban development expert suggested that thriving cities develop around communities such as gays, Prendegast said Banks would be a more effective local body politician if he embraced Auckland's GLBT community. Banks, who is notoriously reluctant to involve himself or his a office in gay matters, has been needled by the Wellington Mayor a number of times since his election success, with each mayor coming from opposite ends of the political spectrum.
