Zimbabwe opposition leader addresses LGBTI rights

Mon 2 May 2016 In: International News View at Wayback

With the national elections coming up in Zimbabwe, the country’s opposition leader has spoken out about LGBTI rights, saying that while he doesn’t support gay people, it is unconstitutional to persecute them.   “I will not stand to persecute gays” Morgan Tsvangirai, leader of The Movement for Democratic Change, told journalists during a briefing. “I know that in our society gays are shunned and as far as I am concerned I am not gay, I don’t support gays. “I only want to say that I will not persecute or prosecute gays because in the constitution they are given that right.” President Robert Mugabe, who has been in power since 1980, is fiercely anti-LGBTI and in the past has said he would not accept an aid deal if it meant Zimbabwe must address LGBTI rights.
