Australian Prime Minister, Malcolm Turnbull, believes if a public vote on marriage equality goes ahead, the country will soon have a law change. Speaking to Tasmanian radio station 7HO FM, Turnbull said “I will be voting yes, I will be voting to legalise same-sex marriage, and I think the plebiscite will be carried. I think it will be a positive vote.” The radio hosts asked the Prime Minister whether they should start to shop for wedding gifts and he responded “That’s up to you… but I think you’re unlikely to be disappointed.” Turnbull says he understands the plebiscite, which was decided upon by former leader Tony Abbott, is “frustrating” and that it is “not the traditional way of resolving matters.” “It’s a view that we’re committed to and it’s thoroughly democratic. I can understand it’s frustrating for people who want to get on with it, and obviously it has a cost associated with it – but it will be a thoroughly democratic process.” A Plebiscite vote is used in area of the law which are not covered by the constitution and is thought to be representative of the will of the Australian people.
