New group offers support for mums of trans children

Fri 29 Apr 2016 In: New Zealand Daily News View at Wayback

A support group for mothers of transgender and gender diverse children has been set up in Wellington. Group Coordinator Melanie Neely says, “This support group is the result of a mother looking for support for herself and her family after their child told them they were assigned the wrong gender at birth.” She says some quick research found that support for transgender and gender diverse children and their families doesn’t kick in until they are 14 years old. Meeting at the Johnsonville Plunket, the group will discuss things that feel are important and facilitators suggest that this may be things like managing gender transitions at school, medical needs and coming to terms with your child’s transition. The six week discussion group will be facilitated by the mother of an eight year old transgender child and the group is a chance for mothers to share experiences, knowledge and offer each other support. Mums of Transgender and Gender Diverse Children Johnsonville Plunket Saturday 14 May - 18 June, 2.30pm - 4.20pm For more information get in touch at mothersnetwork.wn@xtra.co.nz
