Xulhaz Mannan A leading advocate for glbti rights in Bangladesh has been hacked to death by a group of men believed to be Islamic extremists. Xulhaz Mannan and a friend, Tanay Mojumdar, died at Mannan's apartment from cuts to their heads after five or six men forced their way into the building past a security guard who has since been hospitalised. Tanay Mojumdar Mannan was an editor of Bangladesh's first magazine for glbti people, Rupban, and was an organiser of the annual Bengali New Year Rainbow Rally. He had previously worked at the US embassy in Dhaka. A woman who was nearby says she saw the men emerging from the building carrying backpacks and heard them shouting "Allahu Akbar" or "God is Great."
