Transgender local personality Mary Haddock-Staniland is featured in the latest Kellogg’s Special K social media campaign, aiming to encourage New Zealand women to acknowledge the diversity and beauty of their bodies. The cereal company says it has undertaken new research that reveals “as much as 7 out of 10 women in New Zealand experience an ‘I hate my body’ moment every single week.” They say the constant reinforcement of doubt and negativity might be holding Kiwi women back from achieving what they want in life. Haddock-Staniland announced her part in the campaign saying “I remember how much I used to worry about being judged for the person I am. Nowadays, it doesn’t bother me what others think, I’m responsible for my own happiness. “I’m proud to be me.” The well known personality made news in 2015 when she spoke out about the treatment she received while shopping at retail chain, Farmers. She said was asked by staff member in the women’s fashion department if she was a man or woman, then described within earshot to other shoppers as ‘half woman’.
