It can now be revealed that Hamilton man Matthew John Young, is facing 33 charges of fraud, theft and bankruptcy, relating to 16 different victims, including the now-closed Hamilton gay bar Shine. Young had name suppression for almost three years and took a number of applications and appeals through the District Court, High Court and Court of Appeal, before filing an application in the Supreme Court, reports The New Zealand Herald. Young has been bankrupt three times and has pleaded not guilty to charges of dishonestly using a document, carrying on a business fraudulently, managing a company while being a bankrupt, causing loss by deception, obtaining by deception and using an altered document with intent to deceive. As someone who has been adjudged bankrupt Young is not allowed to operate, manage or be a director of a business, however it is alleged that he continued to do so. Shine closed its doors in 2014 and was Hamilton's only gay bar, open for nearly six years.
