Corrections has failed to respond to questions initially raised by No Pride in Prisons regarding the safety of a trans woman in the Whanganui Men’s Prison. When asked why Corrections is not keeping the woman’s advocates at No Pride in Prisons informed about her case or why they have not responded to contact made by the group, Vincent Arbuckle, of DCE Corporate Services says “Corrections is required to comply with the provisions of privacy and official information legislation.” There was also no response to a question regarding what has been done to ensure the safety of the woman. Arbuckle notes that this case is currently under Police investigation and all queries regarding the investigation need to be directed Police. No Pride in Prisons will be picketing the on Department of Corrections Northern Regional office on Friday, April 22 between 8am and midday.
