Two US states push anti-LGBTI laws

Sat 26 Mar 2016 In: International News View at Wayback View at NDHA

Two states in the US are receiving backlash from big name Hollywood stars as they pass laws that allow discrimination against LGBTI people.   Georgia is on its way to passing a bill, HB 757, previously known as the ‘pastor protection act’’, that would remove LGBTI protections and allow businesses to discriminate against LGBTI people, including allowing hospitals to refuse treatment. The bill has passed in the House and Senate, and is waiting to be signed by the Governor. Hollywood has reacted strongly to this proposed bill and stars including Anne Hathaway, Seth MacFarlane, Ryan Murphy and Matt Bomer has threatened to boycott the state, taking their business elsewhere if the bill is signed into law. Georgia is known as the “Hollywood of the South” and nearly 250 films and television shows were filmed there in the past year. In North Carolina, an anti-discrimination law protecting LGBTI people was approved for repeal by the Governor. State Republicans blocked the city of Charlotte from passing the anti-discrimination law which would have allowed trans people to use the bathrooms that match their gender identity. Governor Pat McCrory passed a law that prevents any city or county from passing their own anti-discrimination rules.
