Free massages offered for veterans of HLR

Sat 26 Mar 2016 In: New Zealand Daily News View at Wayback View at NDHA

Next weekend massage and bodywork treatments will be offered free of charge to give thanks to veterans and survivors of the Homosexual Law Reform Campaign. HLR30 Hands will provide massage and bodywork by volunteers who are both members of the LGBTI communities, and are professionally trained in their chosen technique. The treatments onoffer range from craniosacral therapy through Swedish relaxation and remedial massage, to deep tissue and sports massage. Organiser Creek Waddington says anyone from the LGBTI community who remembers law reform can make an appointment and is encouraged to do so. “When I first started planning this event, I was bandying about the term 'activist' and saying this is being held to thank the activists of 1986. But it quickly became apparent, just from hearing personal stories from the time, that 'survivors' was a more accurate and encompassing term – and that's who “It's for everyone, from those who did and do identify as queer rights activists, through to the GLBTTI+ people who were suffering in the closet at the time. All queer survival is brave, and I personally am so relieved that generation made it through, and handed us not just legislative improvement, but also a place in the world. Factious as it is, the queer community is still pretty strong ground where we can stand.” HLR30 Hands On, will be held over the weekend of April 2nd and 3rd, at Thistle Hall on Cuba St, and is taking bookings now.
