LGBTI Change Maker Award nominations now open

After suggestions from the LGBTI community, this will be the first year a LGBTI Change Maker Award will be presented at the The Ministry of Youth Development Youth Week Awards and nominations are now open.   Ara Taiohi, the organisation behind Youth Week, has had a key focus on LGBTI young people since 2012 when the Queer/Trans Caucus was first established as part of Te Hautaki. The the peak body for youth development says “Our work aims to support rainbow young people and the organisations working with them so that young people thrive. “A strong and sustainable rainbow sector and culturally competent support services are essential to be able to positively address the higher risk of mental health issues and suicide among rainbow young people.” Nominees for the LGBTI Change Maker Award must have participated in activities they were nominated for outside of their regular study or work commitments and be aged between 12 and 24 on the 21 May 2016. Youth Week Awards will be awarded to up to five recipients in each of the categories. This year’s Youth Week theme is about giving, be that supporting your family, friends or community, volunteering in the community or sharing your opinion, voice and stories. The annual Youth Week kicks on on 21 May and nominations for awards close at 5pm on 18 April. The nominate someone for this award, head to the Youth Week Award website.
