A nationwide HIV video campaign in South Africa targeted at gay men will not go to air after media bosses refused to show a gay kiss. The video shows a gay couple kissing in front of one of their parents with the message “We’re brave enough to come out. So we’re definitely brave enough to cover up”, however media companies were worried about offending their audiences and demanded it to be toned down. Nina Morris Lee, head of marketing for the group behind the campaign, We The Brave, told Gay Star News; “It astonishes me they would put lives at risk because they don’t want to show a gay kiss. “If our ad was offensive in any way, we would understand but this wouldn’t offend anybody.” Gay and bisexual men are a high risk group when it comes to HIV and it is estimated that they make up 9.2% of all new infections. In the city of Durban, nearly half of all gay and bisexual men are HIV positive. AIDS related illnesses kill 200,000 people in South Africa yearly.
