Clinton credits Reagan with AIDS activism, apologises

Mon 14 Mar 2016 In: International News View at Wayback View at NDHA

Hillary Clinton has come under fire for her comments that wife of former US president Ronald Reagan “started a national conversation” about the AIDS crisis. Clinton made the comments on the day of Nancy Reagan’s funeral during MSNBC’s television coverage, however has since apologised for misspeaking after being called out by AIDS activists in the US. Activists took to social media to remind the world that the Reagan administration had in fact publicly ignored the AIDS crisis until nearing the end of the second term of the 1981-89 presidency and it wasn’t until 1987 that Reagan made his first public speech about it. Apologising on Twitter, Clinton wrote; “While the Reagans were strong advocates for stem cell research and finding a cure for Alzheimer’s disease, I misspoke about their record on HIV and AIDS. For that, I’m sorry.” Clinton is currently in the running for the Democratic presidential nomination, one of two contenders.
