Large crowd expected at WGTN Pride Parade

Fri 11 Mar 2016 In: New Zealand Daily News

Over a thousand people are expected to attend this weekend’s Wellington Pride Parade, the second annual parade in the capital. Photo: Kathryn Armitage The parade will make its way from Frank Kitts Park, along the waterfront to Waitangi Park on Saturday where it will end at the Out in the Park fair day, now in its 30th year. The parade participants will be walking by foot along the parade route, although there may be the odd person on roller-skates - the local roller derby team will be acting as marshalls for the parade and there are rumours of drag queens on segways. Only the second year Wellington has had a Pride parade, last year’s parade was organised by Adrienne and Karen who are now Out Wellington’s Co-Chairs. “I think it will much bigger this year and we have had more interest,” says Co-Chair of Out Wellington Adrienne Girling. Part of the Wellington Pride Festival | Tū whakahīhī e Te Whanganui-a-Tara, the parade is open to all community groups and organisations that are interested in showing their support for the LGBTI communities. A grassroots festival, organisers were very keen to keep the costs for participants to a minimum, making it accessible for everyone. “There is no registration fee,” says Girling, “we just ask that groups and organisations register online so that we are aware of what kind of numbers to expect and to work out the order of the parade.” Wellington Pride Parade Saturday 10 March, 10am
