Police investigating prison sexual assualt

Thu 10 Mar 2016 In: New Zealand Daily News View at Wayback View at NDHA

Police have confirmed they are currently investigating the alleged sexual assault of a trans inmate at the Whanganui Men’s Prison. Prison activist group No Pride in Prisons say they were contacted by a trans inmate who alleges that she was raped by two Corrections Officers shortly after she was transferred to Whanganui Men’s Prison from another facility. The woman later told the group a third Corrections Officer raped her in a separate incident. Director of the Prison, Reti Pearse, has responded to these allegations saying an internal investigation “found no substance to the allegations” and that the matter had been referred to Police. A Police Spokesperson says as this complaint is currently under investigation they are unable to comment on this inquiry.
