Logan dropped from another Pride function

Tue 8 Mar 2016 In: New Zealand Daily News View at Wayback

Hot on the heels of being barred from speaking at Saturday night's Parliamentary function launching the Wellington Pride Festival and marking thirty years since Homosexual Law Reform freed gay and bi men from criminality, one of the bill's most active and high-profile gay proponents has been 'dis-invited' from another function highlighting the legislation. Jac Lynch, organiser of tomorrow's Pride Picnic at Parliament, postponed from today due to bad weather, has confirmed that HLR activist and strategist Bill Logan, who was censured last year by the Association of Counsellors, has had his invitation to speak at the event cancelled. "Bill was invited due to his activism during the fight for Homosexual Law reform," Lynch says. "When I became aware that the Wellington Pride Festival, who are a partner in the picnic, had withdrawn his invitation to speak on Saturday night I discussed the situation with them, heard their reasons and felt I had to support their stance. Otherwise it would seem I was undermining their decision." Lynch says she believes denying Logan those opportunities to publicly celebrate the legislation he did so much to steer to success is the right decision. "I've had enough information to make the decision at short notice and feel right about it. There are issues of ethical and professional boundaries." Lynch says she did not discuss the issue with Logan before withdrawing the invitation. "But I did read the original GayNZ.com article from last year which covered the matter... I felt there were aspects of denial expressed there which concerned me." Logan said yesterday he believes the Pride event organisers are the target of a vendetta against him and that the nature of the matters leading up to the censure, and the type of censure, are being misrepresented and exaggerated. Fellow HLR activist Alison Laurie has defended Logan and is calling for those pressuring the Wellington Pride Festival organisers to come forward.
